Georgia Tax Credit

House Bill 1133 is a law passed in 2008 by the Georgia General Assembly which provides for a Tax Credit for Georgia taxpayers (individuals and corporations) to direct a portion of their Georgia state income taxes to the GOAL Scholarship Program, a state-approved student scholarship organization.  This program benefits students at independent schools like The Westfield School.  Funds made available through the GOAL Scholarship Program will be made available to Westfield and will allow the school to provide financial aid assistance to new families who qualify.

Importantly, donors to GOAL can designate that their contributions be used in support of needs based scholarships at The Westfield School.  However, they cannot stipulate a specific student.

Under the new law, individual taxpayers receive a tax credit against their Georgia income tax liability for amounts contributed to the GOAL Scholarship Program up to $1,000 for an individual and $2,500 for a couple filing a joint return.   In addition, amounts contributed to GOAL are deductible for federal income tax purposes.  Corporations receive a tax credit for amounts contributed to the GOAL Scholarship Program up to 75% of their Georgia income tax liability.   Presently, this tax credit is only fully available to “C” corporations.  Shareholders of “S” corporations, LLCs and LLPs are subject to the individual tax credit limitation.
